Visualizing One Year of Sand, Gravel, and Stone Consumption in the U.S.

Aggregate minerals, which include raw materials such as sand, gravel, and stone, are the building blocks of our cities and an integral part of the U.S. economy.

From being used to make the concrete that shapes our buildings to being the foundation of our roads, aggregates are necessary to maintain our quality of life. But just how much do we rely on these raw materials each year?

To explore the answer, this visualization from our sponsor Burgex uses forecast data from Mineralocity Aggregates to show how much crushed stone, sand, and gravel the U.S. is expected to consume in 2023.

Crushed Stone

Crushed stone is a versatile material that has a variety of uses in road and building construction, landscaping, and other industries. It is typically made from various types of rock, such as limestone, dolomite, and granite, that have been broken down into different sizes.

According to projections by Minerolocity Aggregates, the U.S. will consume 1.73 billion U.S. tons of crushed stone in 2023.

Taking its 100 lb/ft³ density into account, that is equivalent to a cube 3,259 feet high. That’s nearly double the height of the One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the U.S., standing at 1,776 feet as an homage to the country’s Declaration of Independence.

It’s also worth considering per capita usage to grasp the magnitude of aggregates we depend on in our daily lives. In 2023, each American is projected to account for the consumption of approximately 5.2 tons of crushed stone.

While crushed stone production is prevalent across the United States, here are some states that sold the most of this aggregate mineral in 2021.

Texas187,393
Florida104,609
Pennsylvania96,673
Ohio77,052
California56,218

With 99% of all U.S. demand being met by domestic production in 2022, crushed stone is an integral part of the U.S. economy.

Sand and Gravel

Sand and gravel are essential natural resources that are widely used in construction and agriculture. They also have wide uses in industrial activities, such as glass manufacturing, foundries, and metal casting, as well as in recreational activities, such as volleyball courts, golf courses, and beaches.

In 2023, the U.S. is forecasted to consume 1.12 billion U.S. tons of sand and gravel. This is more than 3.3 tons per person.

Here are the top producers of sand and gravel in the United States.

Aggregate minerals are the building blocks of our modern lives.

With over 7,000 commercial aggregate companies operating in the U.S. (while contributing $31 billion to the economy in 2022), their importance to our lives and the economy should not be underestimated.

The Architect Behind Mineralocity: Jake Tanner

My Background

As an experienced geographic information system (GIS) analyst in the oil/gas and wireless infrastructure industries, I was excited to help Burgex improve its consulting projects through added innovation to GIS processes. During my work with various GIS analytics, I discovered and implemented techniques to not only enhance the time line outputs of our data and visuals, but also explore deeper and wider applications of GIS analytics in the aggregates industry.

As I embraced new GIS tools and techniques, I began to consider how we could elevate our analytics and services to the next level. With various processes and data to analyze site-specific opportunities, I wondered how I, as a GIS analyst, could repeatedly generate a granular analysis of site suitability and create a high-resolution picture of aggregate markets. Such curiosity involved reinventing workflows and enhancing processes, which included finding new and improved ways to observe population distributions as well as supply and demand influences in market regions.

What Is Mineralocity?

After months of intensive research, development, and GIS modeling, we created a grid of analysis data that became the foundation of our product, Mineralocity. This product provides high-level transparency of aggregate markets across the United States and enables Burgex and its subscribers to evaluate market conditions, aggregate site opportunities, producer influence, and supplementary market data exponentially faster than ever before.

Being the culmination of tens of millions of data points, Mineralocity has become the new way to observe aggregate market regions, predicted demands, and site suitability at a high level. It sheds light on the importance of resources within reasonable proximity to populated areas, as transportation costs play a big role in the price of purchasing material. Our analytics maps reveal that some regions are well-positioned to meet demand while many are not. Many major cities must transport aggregate materials over extensive distances to meet the growth of their urban and rural development areas.

Markets within the California region showing high Deficit regions will low regional supply.

Markets within the Texas region showing high deficits for aggregate materials at market proximities. Significant supply is present, but hours distance from major demand markets.

Partnering with Dodge Construction Network

The value and insight brought about by Mineralocity have created much attention within the public and private sectors. One of the exciting things that has resulted from Mineralocity is the integration of Dodge Construction Network data, which provides visibility into aggregate intensive projects and estimated construction spend by county. This gives fantastic insight into where aggregates are needed and will be needed in the future. The dataset contains current and pending infrastructure projects consisting of wide, local, and nonresidential construction.

Partnering with MarketBee

Also, we will be implementing an Aggregates Producer Price Index (APPI) via a new partnership with Market Bee, giving insight into the current standings and price fluctuations of aggregates throughout the United States. This will be a valuable addition to Mineralocity for those who want to enter newer favorable markets via mergers and acquisitions or outward expansion. Over time additional data insights will be included, which will provide index pricing information for various individual product types and sizes.

Market Aggregate Producer Price Index (APPI)

The APPI provides an invaluable tool for producers, suppliers, and industry analysts to track and analyze price movements of various aggregates across different geographical areas.

Dodge Data Network

The dataset includes location-based information on where construction dollars will be spent and where aggregate demand is heading.

Always Innovating

As the lead GIS developer for this project, I am proud of what Burgex has accomplished, and I trust that Mineralocity will not only help connect aggregate industry and public leaders but will also bring insight to those within the data analysis/GIS community. Mineralocity is an evolving platform, and we look forward to making positive changes in the mining industry.

We are excited to announce that new aggregate market grids will soon come to the Mineralocity platform. We are working toward having them ready and live upon launch of the Mineralocity major upgrade!

Evolution of Mineralocity

GIS, mineralocity, aggregates, construction, market
By: Jenny Deems, Inside Sales Rep for Mineralocity

When I started at Burgex Mining Consultants more than two-and-a-half years ago, Mineralocity Aggregates was an idea, a thought, a “what if” dreamed up by Stuart Burgess and Chris Summers. Today, as Mineralocity Aggregates team lead, I have the privilege of introducing Mineralocity Aggregates to government agencies, consulting firms, investment companies, aggregate producers, and suppliers to the aggregate industry. I assist subscribers and potential subscribers with access to the platform, billing questions, functionality, data interpretation, and more.

It has been my pleasure to watch this great idea become an even greater reality. I have watched the idea turn into a concept, then a plan, then go through development and production, and finally to be introduced into the market. Mineralocity Aggregates really is Market Intelligence Made Simple.

Now suppliers to the aggregate industry use this powerful tool to better understand their customers and products, and to focus on and create sales strategy plans. Producers gain a better understanding of their competition to develop plans for M&A as well as greenfield expansion.

Mineralocity Aggregates was officially introduced to the public on June 15, 2022. With input from beta testers, subscribers, and free trial users, we have determined which functionalities users desire. By incorporating Dodge Construction Data into the platform we will now enable users to see where funds will be spent so those areas of growth can be targeted. We will also launch a new version of Mineralocity Aggregates that will be more interactive and will allow users to import and export data.

I enjoy the opportunity to watch Mineralocity Aggregates grow from an idea into a valuable tool for our subscribers.

February Newsletter: How a Mining Engineer uses Mineralocity

Q: What is your role at Burgex?

I am a mining engineer, specifically within the consulting group. I started my career seven years ago doing mining engineering work in the construction aggregate space and have been at Burgex for more than three years.

Q: What types of projects do you typically work on?

Mine design, and mine planning such as mine/site layouts, pit shells, volume calculations, production schedules, cycle times, equipment matching and selection.
Valuation work that focuses on implementing a mine plan and calculating operating costs into the life-of-mine plan, all of which feed into the valuation.
I also run models and analyses on currently operating quarries to estimate annual production to evaluate supply that is entering a particular market.

Q: When a client comes to Burgex with a general area of interest, how do you help them determine if a site is worth pursuing?

Before Mineralocity, we did a lot of Preliminary Assessment for Site Suitability (PASS) reports. They are very high-level reviews that report on the local market of a site, and the technical feasibility of that site. An analysis is done on a site-by-site basis, as the models require input of the tract boundary to run properly. We give the site a letter grade from A+ to F, in two categories: market, and technical feasibility. This allows our clients to quickly compare multiple sites and helps them decide where to allocate resources to progress further.

Q: What if a client only has a vague idea of where they want to look to expand or start a new greenfield location?

This is where Mineralocity comes in. It’s hard to choose an area, but we have an idea of where there is a lot of demand for aggregate. It’s really difficult to say whether one area is better than another. It depends on all the other suppliers in the area and distance from metro or population centers, so it can be very difficult to look generally, like a full state or region, unless you have a tool like Mineralocity. With Mineralocity the entire United States can be visualized, and every active producer for construction aggregate can be seen with our GIS-based platform. The map has colorized symbology based on PASS report scoring for easy understanding of where to start looking. With a map like that, it is easy to see how one area compares with another. We also use Mineralocity to perform market share analysis and help our clients identify possible growth opportunities via mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

Q: If a client did the initial market study themselves using Mineralocity, how much time could they potentially save?

Well, it’s not terribly complicated to analyze a potential site if you have the data, and for the most part clients usually have a good idea as to whether it is a “good site“ or not. What would really save a client time is to run this analysis repeatedly on multiple potential site locations. The amount of data you can get from Mineralocity is the same as one of our professional analysis PASS reports, which can take a few hours just to find out that it is not a good site, or whether they should look somewhere else. In Mineralocity, with a simple click of the mouse they will instantly know if they should pursue a location or not. That is a real time-saver.

It is amazing how much data we have incorporated into the platform, but there is so much more on the back end that feeds into it. When a client does this on their own they must comb through so much data, which is incredibly time-consuming. Mineralocity can show a summary of all the data very concisely. If more depth or explanation is needed for all the datasets incorporated, our consulting team can provide that additional expertise.

Q: Ideally clients will use the Mineralocity platform to refine their area of interest to a couple of sites. How does Burgex further help them advance that area?

Mineralocity can really help clients discover a more refined area, but it’s hard to put all the back end data into the platform in a way that it can be seen.

The ideal workflow would be:

Client picks a site and evaluates it using Mineralocity to determine where there is good demand, population, supply in the area, favorable geology, and where the population is growing or declining. We are currently working on adding parcel data to determine if the land is available or not.

Burgex assesses that specific site and investigates it more deeply, starting with its geology to make sure the material on site passes Department of Transportation specifications. Burgex then investigates the specific market, pricing, production costs, and conducts a study of where in the market that material will go.

By doing this further analysis, we can give the client a fully detailed market report on their potential site and they can make an educated decision on whether to pursue the site or not.

Where does Mineralocity fit with suppliers?

My History in Sales

I spent the majority of my career in mining, selling specialty chemicals to the mining industry: 38 years in total. In those 38 years, I had the pleasure of working in the aggregate industry for several years, specifically developing greenfield sales territories. You learn quickly that, unlike other mining segments, the aggregate industry is vast in the number of locations. With so many producers and multiple locations it can be a little overwhelming to fully understand your market and focus your efforts.

When I joined Burgex and was introduced to Mineralocity Aggregates, it was presented to me as a great tool for producers and investors. In truth, it is a great tool for anyone associated with the industry. The big value I saw was potential for suppliers. As I will explain here, Mineralocity Aggregates will provide you with a thorough understanding of the aggregate market, from location and production to geology. And there is more to come.

Where Does Mineralocity Aggregates Fit with Suppliers

Let’s start with the basics. By selecting “Crushed Stone Producers” or “Sand and Gravel Producers” you can see more than 7,000 operating mines across the United States. Using the search function, you can search by company, tonnage, etcetera. A heat map shows the density of producers for a given area that will allow you to identify where producers are concentrated.
Mineralocity Aggregates is an incredibly useful tool for analyzing and understanding markets, from sales call planning, the geographical placement of sales representatives or distributors and supply chain planning. This GIS platform will supply your sales and marketing teams with the critical information they need to make smart planning decisions.

If your revenue can be estimated by annual tonnage or rock type or sand and gravel versus crushed stone, you now have a tool with all the information in one place that will allow you to prioritize your sales and marketing efforts. It’s also easier to analyze corporate accounts with Mineralocity Aggregates by use of the search tool with multiple filters: you can segment an account by stone type, production rate, or type of operation. It will give you the market intelligence to tailor your presentations, product offerings, and performance guarantees with greater accuracy and insight into prospects.

How We Are Innovating

Mineralocity Aggregates is only getting better for producers and suppliers. Since our June launch, innovation continues with the GIS and engineering teams at Burgex. We are switching to a new platform after the first of the year to offer better analytics with customizable dashboards. This will also allow data sharing with our strategic partners, and we’re working on new databases to bring more value to our clients and subscribers. Big things are always in the works for Mineralocity Aggregates.

If you would like to learn more about how Mineralocity Aggregates can benefit your sales and marketing teams, please email me directly at Bill@burgex.com and we’ll arrange a time to get together.

Year in Review

We had an incredible 2022: we launched Mineralocity Aggregates after years of development. This platform took thousands of hours to develop, teams of people across multiple organizations, and putting all the data together was orchestrated by our lead GIS developer, Jake Tanner.

We had a huge response to Mineralocity Aggregates, the premier GIS aggregate platform in the country. Mineralocity Aggregates is getting even better, as we now have Dodge Construction Network data as a new layer. As it gains more recognition, Mineralocity Aggregates is fast becoming the best GIS tool in the market and could someday soon become the industry standard.

Besides launching Mineralocity Aggregates we grew as a company. We hired several key people in sales, marketing, operations, GIS, field crew and others, building an even stronger team.

We attended some outstanding shows across the country and around the world. Some of our favorite shows and events included AME, SME, GSN and PDAC, where we made new friends, learned incredible things, and met many of you! We can’t wait to attend CONEXPO-CON/AGG March 14 through 18 next year at Las Vegas! Look for us at booth N10321 in the North Hall, where we will be giving live demonstrations and answering questions. We look forward to reconnecting with all of you and to a great new year!

Mineralocity Aggregates November Newsletter

Message from the Burgex CEO, Chris Summers

We started with WHY.

According to Simon Sinek, a prominent American author and inspirational speaker, most people and organizations say, “WHAT we do, we sometimes say HOW we do it, but we rarely say WHY we do WHAT we do.” At Burgex, we developed Mineralocity Aggregates with our WHY always being top of mind. In fact, we didn’t fully understand WHAT we wanted to develop until we were a few years into the process.

The one thing we knew without a doubt was that there was an incredible amount of industry data out there, but nobody was able to pull it all together and use it to drive business decisions. We also knew that the demand for aggregates would be increasing rapidly, and supply was not keeping up in many markets. The result has been higher costs for building materials due to the need to transport crushed stone, sand and gravel from long distances to their end use markets. This need for extended transportation, usually in trucks, also creates a larger carbon footprint and increases wear and tear on

our roads, highways and bridges.

That was how our WHY came to life: “To provide the construction aggregates industry with necessary tools to enable the decision-making required to minimize the cost of building materials to end users, while creating a more sustainable future for the environment and our vital infrastructure.”

Once we understood our WHY, we could better understand our WHAT. Henry Ford said, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.” By understanding our WHY, we were able to develop Mineralocity Aggregates and hope that WHAT it can do will contribute to a more affordable, cleaner and sustainable future. Find out more at Mineralocity.com.

UDOT Conference Review

We attended the Utah Department of Transportation show in October. It was a great opportunity to showcase and introduce Mineralocity Aggregates to our local community. Mineralocity Aggregates was well received and there were many in-depth presentations given by Jake, our lead GIS developer. We were excited to meet so many DOT folks who are passionate about the people and the industry. They revealed a new plan to connect all of Utah’s major communities through trails and bike paths; a new project that may take decades to finish but highlights the need to connect people and communities.

That’s similar to what Mineralocity Aggregates can do for a business or local community. Communities can plan ahead when they understand what building materials are required to build public infrastructure, commercial buildings and housing. Mineralocity Aggregates provides users with key data points and market intelligence to enable efficient planning. It is a powerful tool to understand the importance of the aggregate construction industry on our future growth and development.

Wednesday evening of the conference we held an open house where we presented an in-depth demonstration of Mineralocity Aggregates’ capabilities, highlighting local aggregate market dynamics to support current and future growth plans in the greater Salt Lake City area. We also discussed Burgex’s exploration and consulting capabilities. It was a great evening with some new and old friends.

We look forward to the future and growing relationships! Please contact us to learn more about Mineralocity Aggregates.

Meet Jake Tanner: Architect of Mineralocity Aggregates

Jake has been in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) world for the past several years after graduation from Brigham Young University. Jake always valued that GIS was a unique way to look at data geospatially, but when he started working at Burgex he realized he had the skill set to help create something new.

“We re-constructed how we did an analysis of one location, and then basically learned to take that process and then repeat that process–in this case millions of times to give us the results we need,” said Jake. “Mineralocity Aggregates is a platform to understand and educate the aggregate market, its estimated forecasts, and evaluate site opportunities to facilitate market growth.”

Jake continues to lead the Burgex GIS team and discover new ways to enhance Mineralocity Aggregates. “We’re in contact with a lot of new data providers to add insight with forecasting and understand more factors that play a part of the aggregate market,” Jake continued, “With that being the case, it will give our clients greater capacity with the added insight to make more efficient business decisions and help meet the demand to come.”

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

One of the many issues facing construction aggregate producers today is how to strategically grow in an industry experiencing near record demand. We all know that there are two main avenues for growth: via acquisition, and growth through greenfield site selection and development. Both strategies are now becoming more difficult than ever to execute. The good news is that we have developed Mineralocity Aggregates to reduce the angst around these growth problems.

Today we are going to focus on greenfield site selection. Mineralocity Aggregates looks at the area (down to a half square mile) with a focus on identifying ideal target areas. Factors we consider when analyzing opportunities across the country include:

-  Aggregate supply and demand (surplus or deficit).

- Geology what geologic units are currently producing aggregate materials and where is the potential favorable geology?

-Land use: Incorporated vs. unincorporated areas, state and national parks, wetlands, and other difficult to permit areas.

- Proprietary population trends and forecasts.

- Production estimates for potential competitors.

We feel your pain and would love the opportunity to help you accomplish your greenfield growth goals. Let us know if you have questions and we’ll work with you to find the correct solutions.

Cheers,

Chris Summers

Using Mineralocity Aggregates to address NIMBY Concerns: Parleys Canyon, Utah

By: Stuart Burgess
Last week I had lunch with an individual who is involved in exploring the potential of developing a construction aggregate quarry in Parleys Canyon, just outside of Salt Lake City. As with most quarries in the United States, the proposal is facing stiff opposition from the NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) crowd. Our discussion focused on the NIMBY opposition and a necessity to find a way to better portray the economic need for the quarry and benefits to the community beyond jobs and tax revenue. I put my thinking cap on and applied the Mineralocity Aggregates platform to utilize market intelligence for this specific proposed operation.
NIMBY-ism is not a new concept: according to Britannica, “The phrase seems to have appeared first in the mid-1970s.It was used in the context of the last major effort by electric utilities to construct nuclear-powered generating stations.” The term has been used consistently since then in relation to housing developments, homeless shelters, incinerators, sewage treatment systems, fracking, nuclear waste repositories, and of course mining and quarrying projects. The idea behind NIMBY is that local residents aren’t necessarily opposed to the ideas behind a project but want it to be built somewhere else – preferably far away. Far away from the construction, machines, noise, dust, and other perceived hazards. The concept makes sense and seems to follow natural human tendencies – many ideas are great in theory until they have a direct impact on your life. Read more…
FAQ: MARKET POTENTIAL GRADE
This short video explains and explores the Mineralocity Aggregates layers when combined produce the market potential grid and provides a brief overview of how to understand how to use the platform.

In addition to the market potential grid, the Mineralocity Aggregates platform provides a host of other interactive tools such as the estimated annual production range of existing commercial quarries, favorable geological units for construction aggregates, regional economic and population growth indicators for future planning, projections and more. With the advanced GIS layers created by Mineralocity Aggregates, dynamic calculations are run on a matrix of granular grids of less than one square mile that cover entire states and regions.

This generates a high-resolution interactive map that can be used to identify areas of supply deficit, which could be ideal for the placement of a new quarry, pit, or distribution yard. The platform also provides a host of other interactive layers such as estimated annual production range of existing commercial quarries, favorable geological units for construction aggregates, regional economic and population growth indicators for future planning and projections, and more.

NIMBY-ism is not a new concept: according to Britannica, “The phrase seems to have appeared first in the mid-1970s. It was used in the context of the last major effort by electric utilities to construct nuclear-powered generating stations.” The term has been used consistently since then in relation to housing developments, homeless shelters, incinerators, sewage treatment systems, fracking, nuclear waste repositories, and of course mining and quarrying projects.

The answer to NIMBY by most industries is education. Educating the community about the impact of a project, both pros and cons, is helpful to ease concerns. This can be difficult and may require some give and take, and in many cases the residents will remain strongly apposed regardless of efforts made. The quality of the education and information provided certainly helps make a better case for a particular development. Within the construction aggregate industry, mentions are often made of jobs added, tax revenues, and other near-surface economic indicators that have a positive community impact. What about the longer, deeper, and more far-ranging economic impacts? This is where the Mineralocity Aggregates platform finds use in providing an information-intensive, yet visual and approachable, illustration of economic need.

Salt Lake County, including Salt Like City and surrounding suburbs, is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and has seen 15.75% population growth since 2010. According to Census.gov, Utah experienced the nation’s fastest growth in housing units, with an increase of 2.7% between July 1, 2020 and July 1, 2021. Much of the growth has occurred within Utah and Salt Lake counties, both of which are within market reach of the proposed quarry.

According to Mineralocity Aggregates, demand for construction aggregate between 2020 and 2025, within the market radius of the proposed quarry, is projected to increase by more than a million tons in annual consumption.

Parleys Canyon Mineralocity Aggregates Data

Currently, Mineralocity Aggregates estimates that there is a supply deficit of construction aggregates within the market for the proposed quarry of more than 8.6 million tons. This is material that is being shipped into the market, often by truck at a high cost. The deficit is projected to grow through 2025 and beyond.

As a customer of Dodge Construction Network, using their comprehensive projects database, we identified the total value and number of construction projects within a 65-mile market radius of the proposed quarry site. This data indicates that there are 1,225 construction projects at a total value of over $18.8 billion dollars proposed in some stage of development. Virtually all these projects will require some construction aggregates that could be produced at this proposed quarry. If not supplied by the quarry, they will need to be sourced elsewhere – further putting supply constraints on existing regional quarries and ultimately driving up prices. It is believed that many of the existing quarries within the market are operating at or near maximum capacity.

Assuming a current deficit of approximately 8.6 million tons and an increase to roughly 10 million tons by 2025, at an average Utah wholesale price of $10 per ton, this means there is a market opportunity for more than $100M worth of annual construction aggregate sales within the market radius of the proposed quarry. It is unlikely that this proposed operation can meet all the demand, but even just an additional half a million tons of annual regional production will help keep supply chains open for all proposed construction projects in the region. Over the operation’s life, it could potentially bring tens of millions of dollars to the economy directly and through cost savings to downstream consumers – from Utah DOT to commercial construction contractors, and even homebuyers themselves.

Regardless of whether the new Parleys Canyon quarry moves forward or not, the local deficit in construction aggregate materials will increase if construction growth continues, which it is projected to do. Our deficit projections also assume that current output from existing quarries remains consistent, which may not be the case as some major quarries within the market are thought to be reaching the end of their reserves – with no available replacements. It is likely that several new quarries will need to be developed within the next decade to meet the growing demand from commercial, housing, transportation and infrastructure growth. There are limited locations that allow for the production of fine and coarse aggregates that meet stringent quality specifications and are also located within trucking distance from Utah’s high growth region. These quarries will need to be built somewhere – otherwise costs will continue to escalate until it becomes too expensive for continued regional growth.

This problem is not isolated to Salt Lake County or Utah as a whole but is encountered on a nationwide level. NIMBY-ism makes things more expensive, and when it impacts key economic inputs like construction aggregates, the impacts can be felt by all.

With a nationwide dataset and many layers of market intelligence and economic insight, the Mineralocity Aggregates platform gives aggregate producers, trade associations and government entities the insights that they need to make smart decisions and conduct short- and long-term planning. When it comes to addressing NIMBY concerns, this insight could make the difference between success and failure.
